Some time ago, we reported on the Graphene Flagship project, which was launched in October 2013 as part of the EU's Horizon 2020 research programme. The project will be supported with 54 million euros in funding during the 30-month period and will involve a total of 126 academic and industrial research groups in 17 European countries.
Aim of the Graphene Research Project
The aim is to exploit the enormous economic potential of graphene for groundbreaking, novel PCAP touchscreens in the near future. Already on 11 March this year, the European Commission carried out a first review of the Graphene Flagship project with the result that the project is running in line with the desired goals. It is making good scientific as well as technological advances. The first year of operations (October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014) was reviewed.
Increasing opportunities for innovation
The evaluation also confirmed that the flagship project helps to promote strategic discussions on innovation opportunities for Europe, as well as work on standards, health and safety aspects in relation to industry. If you would like to learn more about the project and the results of the report, you can obtain further information, as well as the complete annual report, at the URL given in our reference.
About Graphene
Graphene is one of the hardest and most resilient materials of all and a chemical relative of diamonds, coal or graphite (from pencil leads). It has only one atomic layer, making it one of the thinnest materials in existence (less than a millionth of a millimeter thick). It could, for example, replace the ITO still in use today and revolutionize liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which are used in flat screens, smartphones or monitors.
